Letter: Firefighters stand by local veterans

To the editor:

This is an open letter to the citizens of Gloucester, its veterans and their families,

The Gloucester firefighters would like to state that the spontaneous action that occurred during the 2012 Memorial Day ceremonies was intended to show support for the veterans and their families.

There was no intent to show any disrespect to our community or to the memories of veterans. If our actions caused distress to any veteran or their families, please accept our heartfelt apology.

Many of Gloucester's firefighters are veterans. One who attended the ceremony that day is a Vietnam era vet and lost three friends and classmates to that war. We stood and stand with him and his fellow veterans.

Gloucester firefighters have always been robust and dedicated advocates of veterans and their families, and we will continue to do so.
