To the editor:

The mayor has asked for the community's input before deciding on a development plan for the vacant waterfront lot known as I-4, C-2.

In order for the community to make a well-informed decision about the fate of that precious lot, I urge everyone to take a walk down from Rogers Street to the very impressive and friendly public landing which the state has built at the water's edge of the lot and which has a spectacular view of the harbor. This is a great spot for an outdoor lunch or an added, peaceful, attraction to the Cape Ann Farmers Market every Thursday.

Once experiencing this view you may agree with me that this is a view of our beautiful harbor that ought to be protected for our benefit.

The idea advanced by Superintendent Richard Safier for a potential new school in West Gloucester housing up to perhaps 500 pupils at least recognizes the need for a school that would include more than the current West Parish enrollment of 380, as we've proposed in the past.

Yet under that law, beginning in 2013, manufacturers of medical devices will be subject to a 2.3 percent excise tax on their sales.

Letter: Essex voting rolls still lacking in integrity

To the editor:
On Cape Cod, where town clerks and their boards of registrars understand domicile and residency for voting purposes, summer residents cannot vote at town meetings or local elections.
That is to say there is proper gatekeeping of the voter rolls to ensure that only full-time permanent year-round residents vote.
