Editorial: A family of community servants

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — Some residents might have felt they stepped back in time when they read this week that the Gloucester Police Department had just appointed a Lt. Quinn.

The GPD, of course, had a Lt. Quinn for years — Lt. John Quinn, who served 37 years with the department before his retirement. And many residents also know Detective Tom Quinn, who has served on the force for years and long been a familiar figure on Gloucester’s streets as well.

But yes, the naming of Lt. Quinn was indeed news — David Quinn, who has been with the department for 17 years and had previously served as sergeant, had been named a lieutenant to succeed the retiring Thomas Williams.

Quinn’s promotion (the Times, Wednesday, July 31), not only means he has followed in the footsteps of his and Detective Quinn’s father, but is a positive step for the department as well. Police Chief Leonard Campanello said David Quinn’s promotion is fitting given that he is an “innovative thinker” and committed to the department’s community-minded leadership time. Indeed, that commitment to a community focus has been an important one for the GPD, and promises to be for years to come.

In that vein, we not only congratulate the newest Lt. Quinn on his well-deserved promotion, but also commend him and his entire family on their extraordinary community service.
