To the editor:
How do you get over 1,000 preteens and teenagers together without any problems?
Ask Coach Jim Munn.
I recently attended the annual NEC cross-country championship and invitational meet at Stage Fort Park on a beautiful Cape Ann afternoon. There were runners from grades five through eight, from both private and public schools. Everyone there was having a great time and cheering the youth on to do their personal best.
We are lucky here in Gloucester to have Coach Munn. He is extremely dedicated to the sport and to the athletes. You can always find him training the youths, encouraging them, and letting them know that they are capable of great things. He is the person responsible for bringing this event to Gloucester and for getting a great sponsor, Saucony.
Now the sport has grown to such a level that the first state championships for middle-school cross country will be held this Saturday in Devens.
These are kids who do well in school, making sure to complete their homework, even if they had a late meet the night before. They train hard, race hard, and cheer each other on.
They should be recognized for all this and given credit, so that they will continue on to new goals and success in the future.
