Letter to the editor: 'Three In One' thoughts for holiday season

To the editor:

Well, here we are nearing another holiday season.

The holiday is fast approaching and I am sure Action Inc. has started to work on its Project Uplift program. I wrote about it in my last writings. I hope the readers took my message to heart.

So now as the need to gather Christmas gifts for children. We also have need for what I call the "Three In One." I guess by now your asking yourself; just what is Three In One? It is three programs now under one title: Open Door.

In the past we had Open Door, Cape Ann Food Pantry, and Second Glance. They still exist, but under one name. So now let's down to the nitty-gritty. This winter is predicted to be one of the coldest we have had yet. It is also a winter where there are also a lot of families separated, either from being involved with fighting for the freedoms of others, or being cast out in the streets.

Sadly, some families in need have fallen in the cracks in the pavement of life. I urge those who can do so to donate those hand-me-downs to Second Glance on Pond Road. It is called Second Glance, but like the hand-me-downs, it's also a second chance. Please donate your usable clothes, furniture, household materials.

The second of the Three In One is The Open Door food pantry. Those who are qualified seek out the pantry for nourishment for their loved ones. This season there is even more need for nourishment. People are being laid off almost daily. I am going to issue a challenge, not only to the individuals, but also the business community. I am passing this challenge of a goal to be met to the city as a whole. I challenge the banks, the stores, both downtown and at the new Gloucester Crossing. I challenge Gorton's of Gloucester. I particularly challenge Market Basket, Stop & Shop, and both Shaw's Markets.

I also challenge all the liquor stores to make this a holiday season that will not be forgotten. We must all put our heads and our hearts together to meet the challenges of those of in need.

The third is that of The Open Door meals program. This program is for anybody that needs a good meal. It is mostly serviced by local churches and numberless companies and organizations. It does not make a difference what your income is. All are welcome.

So, that's the "Three in One." This is my own interpretation, and these are my thoughts.

In closing, indeed the holiday season is fast coming. This holiday season, while your doing your shopping, why not while looking down at that loved one's special list also take a look at the window of life?

As you look upon your children, think of those less fortunate than them. In giving, either food, clothing or just a small gift, give the way you would give to your family.

Have a wonderful and joyous holiday season.
