Letter to the editor: Do we need the full-size CATA buses?

To the editor:

Is everyone entitled to a free ride from Rockport to Gloucester and back, even if they are the only ones on the great, big bus?

How many miles to the gallon do you think the buses get?

Paying anything less than $5 is a free ride, and over $70,000 a year is paid by the town of Rockport to subsidize CATA. Think about that every time you see an empty bus drive by and smell the diesel fumes.

The CATA small Dial-a-Ride buses make sense. They are wheelchair accessible and deliver the rider door to door. The large buses should be replaced with more such small buses and have a voucher system with the taxi company.

When drivers over 85 have to requalify for their license, there will be more ex-drivers needing transportation. Since they no longer have the expense of a car, they can afford to take a taxi now that Rockport has a taxi company.

Don't be surprised if the age to recertify your driving skills all of a sudden drops to 65.
