Letter to the editor: A time of thanks for cancer volunteers

To the editor:

The season of Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for our families, friends, and blessings. For the American Cancer Society, it is also another opportunity to express gratitude to our many volunteers.

Across the country, more than 3 million people volunteer for the society, working to create a world where cancer never steals another year from anyone's life.

The society has a long and proud history of volunteerism which is critical in helping to drive forward our mission to eliminate cancer. Volunteers are working all across Massachusetts to make a difference in their communities while helping cancer patients and their families.

These individuals share their unique gifts and talents with the society in so many ways. They are helping to plan and implement the nearly 100 Relay For Life events across the state; they coordinate or provide rides to cancer patients who have no other way of getting to their lifesaving treatments; they raise money and walk in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer; they assist newly diagnosed cancer patients by providing information on cancer and treatment, as well as access to practical day-to-day assistance and emotional support.

These are just a few examples of how volunteers in Massachusetts are making a difference in the fight against cancer every day, and we could not be more grateful for all that they do!
