Letter to the editor: Vote Coakley for leadership, commitment

To the editor:

I urge you to vote for an excellent candidate to fill the U.S. Senate seat that the late Ted Kennedy held for so many years.

That candidate is our Democratic attorney general, Martha Coakley.

While all the candidates have their strengths and experiences, Martha Coakley is the one that has demonstrated she will work tirelessly for the common good. Her thoughtful education policies will support our schools' needed improvements.

Her jobs plan will pull the economy out of recession by engaging the business community and government in creating good jobs that will assure financially security for families. Hailing from the industrial city of North Adams, Martha understands the complex issues that small cities such as Gloucester face. She demonstrated this when she visited Gloucester, rolled up her sleeves and went to work on solving our problems.

As our attorney general, Coakley, has worked to protect homeowners from predatory lenders, and senior citizens from scam artists trying to bilk them out of their savings. She started the Cyber Crime Initiative to curtail identity theft and protect children from online sexual predators, and fought for the dignity and rights of persons with disabilities.

Martha Coakley has the compassion, the temperament, and the ability to connect with people, understand their problems, and find solutions.

Her education, experience, and common sense approach gives her the skills to be successful in advocating for the needs of our state and to make thoughtful votes of legislation. She is our best hope of bringing the federal government to the table as a partner in funding Gloucester's critical infrastructure needs.

In addition, she has also promised to maintain Sen. Kennedy's outstanding commitment to delivering constituent service. Please join me in voting in the special primary for a quiet, principled leader with a strong commitment to getting results for our citizens and our community.
