To the editor:
In the primary election next Tuesday, our group, No More Fukushimas, strongly endorses Congressman Edward J. Markey as the next U.S. senator from Massachusetts.
As a leading proponent of nuclear power plant safety at the Seabrook nuclear power plant– as well as at nuclear plants across the nation—Ed Markey has worked tirelessly to protect the public safety of thousands of Massachusetts families and millions of Americans.
For decades, Congressman Markey has been a powerful voice for those of us who live and work in the shadow of the Seabrook plant, especially as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Seabrook plant owners rush to extend the operating license of the Seabrook nuclear power plant by 20 years—only halfway through the plant’s current license.
In the past year, Congressman Markey, along with Congressman Tierney, has repeatedly challenged the NRC’s relicensing process, stating that the effort to extend the license is premature in that it comes early in the plant’s life before the plant has significantly aged.
In addition, Congressman Markey has pressured the NRC to thoroughly investigate the concrete degradation of “safety” structures at the plant, which poses a risk to the safety of thousands of families throughout the region.
We urge all Democrats and Independents to vote for Ed Markey on Tuesday, April 30 in the Senate primary election. Ed Markey has had our back for decades and, now that he is running for Senate, he deserves our full support.
