Letter: Tierney deserves vote for aid to veterans

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — To the editor:

As a veteran, I take pride knowing my U.S. military service, in some small way, helped protect the rights we enjoy. This year, as we vote, and as veterans return home, we need a congressman who will show them we are grateful for their sacrifices, welcome them as they begin to reinvent their lives. They cannot simply pick up from where they left off, and may need our help. John Tierney is that congressman.

He has been there for all veterans over the years. When news broke of the deteriorating conditions at Walter Reed, Congressman Tierney stood on the forefront to force the Department of Defense to upgrade all facilities caring for veterans. He stopped the Bedford VA Hospital from closing, opened VA clinics in Lynn, Gloucester and Haverhill so veterans needing care are not forced to travel more than 15 miles.

Congressman Tierney helped returning veterans with legislation providing transitional job training, tax credits for businesses that hire them, secured $400,000 for expanded educational and career services for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families in our area. He’s been there for other needs of veterans and military families, assisting with VA home loans, and a GI Bill for the new century.

We each have a responsibility to those we called to duty, put their lives on hold, go into harm’s way for our freedoms. As they return to civilian life, face new obstacles, they deserve a congressman with a proven record of support.

The actions of Congress send a message how our nation honors veterans. I ask you to join me in voting for Congressman Tierney for all veterans and military families in the nation, especially in the Sixth Congressional District.
