---- — While Essex residents sort out their Town Meeting decisions tonight, Rockport voters face their own choices in Tuesday’s annual town elections, with polls open at the three usual precincts from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
One ballot choice is simple. Residents have already backed a referendum to allow a hopefully incoming grocery store to sell beer and wine; now, with the home-rule legislation now back from the State House, they should provide their final stamp of approval.
The selectman’s race is not so clear-cut, with two political newcomers — Donald Campbell and Eliza Lucas —vying for the seat now held by Fances Fleming. Both have expressed good ideas for the town, and each would bring a fresh approach to its governance.
But it is Lucas who, as co-owner of Top Dog — a downtown and, in fact, Bearskin Neck business — has already dealt on the front lines with the town’s business regulation and parking issues. And it is she who has zeroed in more specifically on them heading into Election Day. She deserves a chance to take a selectman’s leadership role.
