Kudos to Gloucester schools Superintendent Richard Safier for his recent column on student input. In the 16th century, the French philosopher Montagne advised teachers to listen to their students. When teachers do it today, it is called innovation!
In a career that spanned more than 50 years, I taught in a variety of secondary schools, and the best were the ones that listened to the students. In fact, by far the most successful one had a governing body that gave students a real stake in the school’s decision-making. As a result, the students knew they were valued and worked hard to prove their worth. Everyone, students and adults alike, were eager to get to school every day, and today those students are making major contributions in all walks of life around the globe.
