To the editor:
So, House Minority Leader Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi and Congressman John Tierney were in Beverly speaking about a congressional agenda for women, and the discussion included an item regarding the minimum wage for women and equal pay.
It must be pointed out that equal pay should be mandatory but the minimum wage applies to everyone who works — not just women. This visit was more of a political endorsement for Congressman Tierney’s re-election. It added political capital to his war chest.
What bothers me is that, for years now, the Times and the Salem News, among others, have been printing stories and writing editorials about the Gloucester fishermen and the fishing industry and their loss of jobs, ships, fleets, business and plain old money. Once a thriving industry with full employment in Gloucester, the area is now in a depression. Who is to blame?
Every time I see a Elizabeth Warren for Senate bumper sticker, I find it extremely disturbing. Her election campaign was a sham that played up to women’s fears and not economic realities such as exist in Gloucester and New Bedford. Sens. Warren, Ed Markey, Congressman John Tierney, Governor Deval Patrick, Secretary of State John Kerry and the entire Massachusetts congressional delegation — all Democrats — have delivered virtually nothing to really save the Gloucestermen, their families, their industry and the ancillary companies connected to them.
This is a dirty rotten shame and these politicians should never be re-elected to any job.
It is a fact that the real goal of career politicians is not for the common good, but for “self preservation.”
