The Coast Guard is practiced at the art of boarding fishing boats and checking their captains permits from aboard the Island-class patrol boat, Grand Isle, which with a range of 3,380 nautical miles. Built in the late 1980s, the cutter can maintain speeds of 28 to 30 knots, and is armed with one 35 mm cannon and two .50-calibre machine guns.
