Fort zoning on hold, but hotel is out

Gloucester's City Council was unable to resolve questions about a proposed rezoning of the Fort neighborhood last night, and sent it back to planners for more work.

But despite near deadlock over some issues, councilors vowed that no zoning change would include the possibility of a hotel coming to the neighbourhood.

The proposal would create an overlay district in the Fort opening up possible residential and mixed use developments, but has been vigorously opposed by an alliance of Fort residents and business owners fearful of gentrification.

The overlay will be taken up again by the Council's Planning and Development committee for review and revision by planning staff, councilors and stakeholders in the Fort. It has 90 days to make it back to the full City Council for a vote.
