Letter to the editor: Wanted: More fair play in cartoons

To the editor:

The Gloucester Daily Times recently printed cartoons two straight days about Barack Obama that appear to come straight from the McCain campaign's playbook.

The first shows him as a king with the media (including favorite whipping boy the N.Y. Times) as slavish courtiers doing his bidding. I read the Times Web page every day and this is nonsense; they dissect both candidates' statements and position changes with equal diligence and, along with their liberal op-ed writers, have nationally known conservative columnists David Brooks and William Kristol having at Obama.

The second equates Obama with a shallow stoner dude "like doing Europe, man!" — a shameless pickup on the shameless McCain ad comparing him to pitiful celebrities Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears. I am not an "Obamaniac" but find this belittlement insulting.

Why don't you instead run a series of cartoons on the serious issues that perhaps affect Cape Ann and have some thoughtful assessment of how the two candidates' positions address these concerns?
