Local students participate in Job Shadow Day at AGH

Addison Gilbert Hospital recently participated in Groundhog Job Shadow Day, a nationwide effort to give more than 1 million high school students an up-close look at the working world. Sponsored by Best Buy Children's Foundation, the program allows students to explore various careers through worksite-shadowing experiences.

"Groundhog Job Shadow Day is such a rewarding experience for students, and Addison Gilbert Hospital was proud to participate for the eighth consecutive year," said Jane Karaman, manager of volunteer services at the hospital, in a statement. "By pairing up with hospital employees, students learned what to expect when they enter the work force, while being introduced to a variety of health care careers that they may want to consider after graduation."

Cape Ann high school students Molly Amero, Caitlin Cole, Ashley Nunes, Bryanna Porter, Brittany Foote, Melanie Brancaleone, Thomas Carbone, Asha Ahearn, Kelly Duchane, Stefan Pieterse and Kayleigh Keating spent their day shadowing two health care professionals within the hospital.

Paws for Praise offers therapy dog classes

Anne Springer, who has directed SeniorCare's Pawsitive Connections Program since 2000, and who is well-known on the North Shore and Cape Ann for her work with elders and pet issues, is also a business owner with a humanitarian interest in training therapy dogs. Her training center, Paws for Praise LLC, located at 119 Liberty St. in Danvers, just initiated its first class of hopefuls for therapy dog registration with Therapy Dogs Inc.

The six-week class, which also helps dogs and handlers train for the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Award, teaches participants how to conduct "feel good" visits to residents of nursing homes, day-care facilities, hospitals, and other settings. Some of the dogs, upon graduation, will be looking for places to make visits, but others have plans in place already, such as local Reading to Rover programs that help children with their reading skills.

Springer may be contacted at 978-356-7667 for details.
