Bivins named vice president

VNA Care Network and Hospice, Gloucester's District Nurses since 1914, recently named D. Anne Bivins vice president of hospice.

Bivins brings more than 30 years of experience in nursing and health care management to her role leading palliative care and hospice services for individuals facing life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones.

"I long have had an interest in helping people better understand that palliative care and hospice are about living every day free of physical and spiritual pain," Bivins said in a statement. "The ability to assist patients and their families to remain in familiar surroundings supported by sophisticated professional care is truly a privilege."

VNA Care Network and Hospice's Care Choices palliative care program offers pain and symptom management and other services for patients pursuing curative/restorative treatment for cancer, cardiac disease and other serious illnesses.

Hospice combines physical, emotional, spiritual and practical support to help terminally ill patients and their loved ones focus on life. Care is provided in patients' homes, nursing homes, assisted living and other facilities.

Bivins most recently served as director of quality improvement/privacy and risk management for VNA Care Network and Hospice's home health care, hospice, wellness programs and other services. Prior to joining VNA Care Network and Hospice, she was part of the senior management team of Partners Home Care, president and chief executive officer of Newton Wellesley Home Health Services, and director of clinical services for the VNA of the South Shore.

A resident of Norwood, Bivins received her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from Boston College and master's in business administration from Suffolk University. She is a past president and board member of the Home and Health Care Association of Massachusetts.

VNA Care Network and Hospice has a local office at 8 Angle St. in Gloucester.

Schafer named to TradeStone board

TradeStone Software, the retail industry's leading provider of private label and global sourcing solutions, recently announced that SAS Retail Executive Lori Schafer has joined TradeStone's Board of Directors.

Schafer is the executive adviser to SAS Institute's Global Retail Practice and also serves on the board of directors of several retail and technology companies. Schafer will provide strategic guidance as TradeStone continues to expand its growing dominance in the global retail market.

Prior to her tenure at SAS, Schafer served as chairman and chief executive officer of Marketmax, a software company specializing in retail merchandising and revenue optimization solutions. During her tenure as CEO, she built the company into a recognized leader in merchandising analytics solutions, serving many of the industry's largest and most recognized retailers. Seven years later, Schafer orchestrated the successful strategic acquisition of Marketmax, to SAS in 2003.

Schafer has more than 20 years' experience in consumer goods, retail and technology. Prior to her current position at SAS, Schafer served as the vice president of Global Retail Practice and president of Marketmax, a Division of SAS. Schafer began her career at The Procter & Gamble Co. and then spent time as a consultant to some of the nation's top retailers. She serves on the boards of A.C. Moore, eFashion Solutions, Trans World Entertainment Corp. and geoVue Inc., where she is chairman.

Post Office awards

Manchester Postmaster Jack Buckley was awarded a plaque in recognition of the Manchester Post Office attaining perfect Mystery Shopper scores during Postal Quarter One of the fiscal year.

Essex Postmaster Thomas A. Champigny was recently presented with a 35-year service award.

Massachusetts Postal District Manager John W. "Mike" Powers III made the presentations.
