Manor Inn hires new chef

The Manor Inn Steak House at 141 Essex Ave. in Gloucester will open Thursday, April 17, with a new chef.

Jude Mathews, who has a doctorate degree in organic chemistry, has traded the lab for the kitchen after earning her degree in culinary arts at The Culinary Institute of America.

Mathews, who hails from Savannah, Ga., where her family owns a third-generation seafood business, will introduce a new menu that will feature the all-natural Brandt Farm beef known for its superior taste and tenderness. The menu will also offer an eclectic assortment of seafood, chicken and vegetarian dishes.

Her specialties include low-country dishes such as seafood creole and deviled crab cakes.

The restaurant, which is located in an old Victorian mansion, has three dining rooms plus a room available for small private parties and a function facility for larger parties. Morris named manager

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce announced that Beth Morris has been named economic development and membership manager.

A 14-year resident of Gloucester, Morris lives in West Gloucester with her husband, Dan, and daughters Hannah and Zoe.

Morris has been actively involved in community issues, especially school advocacy. She served for six years on the board of the Gloucester School Connection, established the volunteer-run library program at West Parish School, administers the library program at O'Maley Middle School, and is a local leader and state representative of Gloucester Stand for Children.

She brings both nonprofit organizational experience and a professional background in banking and marketing.

"This region is important to me," Morris said in a statement. "I would like to make a real contribution to its vibrancy."

Morris will work with the chamber's active Tourist and Retail Divisions, as well as with the broad range of membership benefits and services available to the 1,200 companies that currently belong to the chamber.

Company opens sustainability office

New England's largest commercial flooring company, Allegheny Contract of Winchester and Providence, R.I., has opened an office of sustainability at 1 Center St. in Gloucester.

James Auditore stepped down as the company's chief executive officer last year to dedicate himself to the purpose of transforming Allegheny into a company that is not only sustainable, but one that will take on restorative qualities.

The office of sustainability's main goal is to research green-building to facilitate this transformation over the next 10 years. Any assistance the company can be to its customers or others in these matters will be on a pro-bono basis.

Rowe named project manager

Mill River Consulting Inc. announced that Isaac M. Rowe has joined its staff as project manager.

Rowe will work with Mill River Consulting's private and municipal clients providing services, which include design of wastewater systems, subdivisions layouts, plan reviews, soil evaluations, system inspections, and a wide range of other engineering projects. Among Rowe's specialties is extensive knowledge of alternative treatment technologies.

Rowe joins a team of surveyors, wetlands scientists, registered sanitarians, engineers and other professionals who sit on local, regional and national advisory boards.

"Isaac brings an incredible blend of knowledge and experience as well as a warm and friendly personality to our team of dedicated professionals and we feel fortunate to have him join us," said Daniel Ottenheimer, president, in a statement.

Rowe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a registered sanitarian, licensed soil evaluator, and a licensed septic system inspector.

Prior to joining Mill River Consulting, Rowe was a public health sanitarian for the city of Gloucester Health Department and, more recently, was an environmental sanitarian for a leading Northeast engineering firm.
