James named Unsung Heroine

Janet B. James of Rockport, chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of Perkins School for the Blind, has been named an Unsung Heroine for 2008 by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

James, who got involved with Perkins in the 1990s, has devoted countless hours of service to the school during the past 12 years.

"Janet's contributions can be seen in almost every aspect of life and programs at Perkins: capital and campus planning, senior management and volunteer leadership, philanthropic support, domestic and international services," Steven Rothstein, Perkins School president, said in a statement. "The legacy of Perkins School for the Blind, the nation's first school of its kind, is stronger because of Janet. She is a resourceful, hard-working, dedicated, intelligent woman whose efforts have made, and continue to make, a critical difference in the lives of children in every corner of the commonwealth and beyond."

"Our Unsung Heroines are women who don't make the news but make the difference in their communities, businesses, or volunteer endeavors," Linda Brantley, MCSW executive director, said in a statement. "They are the women who quietly, without fanfare or recognition and usually behind the scenes, use their time, talent, spirit and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others."

Carter named Unsung Hero

Stephen E. Carter, Greater Beverly Housing manager for the North Shore YMCA, has been named the North Shore United Way's Unsung Hero for 2008.

Carter manages 128 units of housing, including all of the single rooms in the Cabot Street YMCA and family housing on Rantoul Street, as well as at the Mayflower Hotel. He also manages properties on Mill and Grant streets in Gloucester Crossing that are being developed into new affordable housing complexes with the Beverly Affordable Housing Coalition.

"Steve Carter has been singled out not only for his commitment to affordable housing, but for the exemplary and compassionate way he provides support and services to the YMCA's tenants," said Margo Casey, North Shore United Way president, in a statement. "Steve grew up in a housing project in Gloucester and he understands first-hand the plight of poor families."

An active community volunteer, Carter coached girl's basketball in Gloucester for 15 years, until stepping down last year, and coordinated a couple of youth leagues. He has been tending the flower and organic vegetable gardens at Wellspring House in Gloucester for the past four years.

A lifelong resident, Carter lives in Gloucester with his wife, Karen, who works at the Gloucester Housing Authority. They have three grown children, Steve, Rachel and Kevin.
