Gloucester goings on

Public hearing

The Gloucester harbormaster will hold a public hearing Monday, June 1, 6:30 p.m., in the Friend Room, Sawyer Free Library, to review the application of a 10A Float Permit for Bickford's Marina, 31 Rocky Neck Ave. All interested persons are welcome.

Plant sale

The Gloucester Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale Saturday, June 6, 9 a.m. to noon, at 93 Atlantic Road. The event will be held rain or shine. Garden-related books and tools will also be for sale. Proceeds benefit the club's civic plantings around Gloucester.

Student medical records

Any Gloucester High School student from the Class of 2004 who would like to pick up a copy of his or her medical records/immunizations will need to call the Gloucester High School nurses office at 978-281-9868. Records will be available in the nurses office until June 5. After this date, these records will no longer be available.

Quarter Deck Poetry Contest

Do you live in Gloucester? Are you inspired by the Man at the Wheel? Do you have a poem about the Gloucester-inspired Massachusetts quarter? Send the poem, along with your home address and contact information, to: Quarter Deck Poetry Contest, Box 5524, Gloucester, MA 01930. Winners will be published and recognized in public ceremonies in Gloucester and Boston. Deadline for entries is Aug. 23, the day (in 1925) that the statue was dedicated.

Gloucester Stage musical

The Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main St., opens its 30th anniversary season with the Broadway musical "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" from June 4-21. Based on the comic strip "Peanuts" by Charles M. Schulz, this family-friendly musical features a professional cast led by acclaimed Boston performer Mary Callanan as Lucy. Performances are June 4 to 6, June 10 to 13 and June 17 to 20 at 8 p.m.; June 6, 13 and 20 at 3 p.m.; and June 7, 14 and 21 at 4 p.m. Following the June 7 performance, audiences are invited to a free post-show discussion with the actors. A limited amount of discount tickets are available to Cape Ann residents for Wednesday and Thursday performances. For these performances only, adult Cape Ann residents can purchase tickets for $18.50. Reservations are suggested. Year-round Cape Ann residents must identify themselves when making reservations. Proof of residency must be presented at the box office the night of the performance. The regular ticket price is $32-$37. Tickets are $15 for children 12 and under, $25 for students with an ID. Commercial clam applications

Gloucester's commercial clam applications will be available from Monday, June 1, to Tuesday, June 30, at the city clerk's office. Hours are Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Trash stickers exchange

Since the inception of the official Pay As You Throw purple bag, the city has been exchanging stickers for bags at the Department of Public Works on Poplar Street. This will continue until June 30. Bring old stickers to the Department of Public Works between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to exchange them for purple bags.

Holy Family Women's Guild

The Holy Family Parish Women's Guild will meet Tuesday, June 2, 6:30 p.m., at St. Ann Church, parish hall. The new officers and board members for next year will be introduced. A Chinese food buffet will be followed by live entertainment with Mel Simon. All members and guests are welcome.

Basketball League

CAMPS retreat

The CAMPS (Christ As My Personal Savior) youth program will attend a one-week retreat at Geneva Point Convention Center in Moultonboro, N.H., Aug. 10-15. Celebrating its 26th year of ministry, the retreat, featuring music, speakers and games, will give participants the chance to share their lives and faith with up to 300 teens from Massachusetts and beyond. 'The Vagina Monologues'

The Gloucester Fireworks Committee is working hard on organizing the July 3 and Labor Day weekend fireworks displays. Business counseling

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, 33 Commercial St., offers free small-business counseling on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The program is suitable for anyone considering starting a business or who has questions about any aspect of a company that is already operating. 'Back to the '80s'

The Gloucester High School Theater Program will present its spring musical, "Back to the '80s," on Saturday, May 30, 2 p.m., in the Gloucester High School auditorium. Join the graduating class of William Ocean High School as the students live through their senior year — all set to the biggest hits of the '80s. CCEG youth basketball

Gloucester Preschool

Gloucester Preschool, located at Fuller School, is registering children ages 3 to 5 for the 2009-10 school year. Support for troops

The Gloucester Office of Veterans' Services is seeking help from the community

Knitters wanted. The office has received requests from troops in Iraq and Afghanistan for hand or machine knit helmet liners, scarves, neck gators, and socks. Contact the office for specific instructions.

Donations needed. The office is accepting donations of needed goods, including AT&T telephone cards, and donations for mailing boxes to send to the troops. Military families need help, too.

Military family members. Residents are urged to register their active duty family member(s) with the office. Already registered? Let the office know where your active duty family member is stationed.

Harvest Meals

Cape Ann Interfaith Commission offers harvest meals Tuesdays and Fridays, when meals are not served at the Open Door. Meals are offered Tuesdays at St. John's Church, 48 Middle St., and Fridays at Trinity Congregational Church, 70 Middle St. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. on both days. Meals are served from 5 to 6. All are welcome. There is no charge.

Adult Learning Center

Wellspring Adult Learning Center, at Sawyer Free Library, offers free tutoring and small group classes in English for non-native speakers. Morning concert for seniors

'Protecting Your Nest Egg'

North Shore Health Project provides services to those living with HIV, AIDS and hepatitis C. Isabel Babson Memorial Library

Isabel Babson Memorial Library, 69 Main St., is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library, named for Gloucester's first midwife, has books featuring every aspect of family life including maternity, child care and women's health. Cape Ann Food Pantry

Cape Ann Food Pantry, 28R Emerson Ave., provides free food assistance Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.; Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Basic household information and a valid identification are required. Tuscany, Florence tour

Cape Ann Travelers will travel to Tuscany and Florence in Italy from Oct. 14 to 23. The trip will include a six-night stay in the Tuscan countryside and a two-night stay in Florence. Travelers will visit ancient and historic towns, famous vineyards for wine tastings and artisan studios, and tour the art and culture of the area. Teen Mentoring Program

The Children's Friend and Family Services will hold informational sessions to recruit prospective mentors for the Gloucester Teen Mentoring Program on Thursdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25, 6 to 7 p.m., at 101 Western Ave. The program matches adults ages 21 and older with children ages 13 through high school graduation who need a positive role model in their life. Recycling program

The Department of Public Works' automotive, scrap metal and fluorescent bulb recycling program will be open Saturday, May 30, 9 a.m. to noon, at 28 Poplar St. Acceptable items include bicycles, water heaters, radiators, swing sets, pipes, bed frames, weights, grills (no propane tanks), aluminum doors, cast iron, metal furniture, stoves, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers. Fluorescent light bulbs, thermostats and mercury thermometers will be collected. The automotive recycling center will collect used oil, oil filters, tires and car batteries. Tire disposal is limited to two per month. Anything containing freon (air conditioners, freezers, refrigerators and de-humidifiers) cannot be accepted. Museum lecture

Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant St., will present a lecture titled "Gloucester's First Parish Burial Ground: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" with landscape architect Martha Lyon on Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. A walking tour of the burial ground located at Centennial Avenue will immediately follow the lecture. Student, teacher cookout

The Gloucester High School Class of 2009 Student Council will host a cookout for the senior class, their parents and their past teachers Wednesday, June 10, 5 to 8 p.m., at the GHS practice field. Free pharmacy session

A registered pharmacist from Addison Gilbert Hospital will be at the Rose Bake Senior Center every other month to review medications, answer questions and offer suggestions. 'Blues & Rock Legends Night'

A "Blues & Rock Legends Night" will be held Friday, June 19, in the Essex Room at Woodman's in Essex. The James Montgomery Blues Band with special guest guitarist J. Geils will headline the show. Local band Bingo Fridays, headed by lead guitarist Jake Pardee of Rockport, will open the show. Yard sale

The residents of Sheedy Park will hold a yard sale every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., through the summer, weather permitting. The yard sale will be held on the Shepherd Street side of the building.

The Clothes Closet

The Clothes Closet, in the basement of St. Ann School, corner of Prospect and Pleasant streets, is open Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Clothes Closet is made possible through the volunteer efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Holy Family Parish. Cape Ann Art Haven

Cape Ann Art Haven offers family studio time every Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to bond with your children through art. Cost is $10 for the first child, $5 for each additional child. CAAH also offers classes for third- through fifth-graders every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. The class runs for one month and costs $60. Action Inc. Employment and Training Program, located at 180 Main St., offers these classes:

Microsoft Windows for Beginners. Course is designed to teach a beginner to use a computer keyboard and mouse, work with Microsoft Windows programs, manage files, customize windows, manage folders and maintain programs and flash drives. Six-week class meets Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m., beginning June 24.

Microsoft PowerPoint. Learn to use this powerful presentation software for creating and viewing slideshows during face-to-face meetings and presentations. Six-week class meets Wednesdays, 6 to 8 p.m., beginning Aug. 12.

Parent Connection

Wellspring Cape Ann Families offers a free parent support and education group twice weekly (ongoing throughout the year) for all parents and caregivers. YMCA Theater Club

The Cape Ann YMCA Teen & Camp Services Branch will offer a YMCA Theater Club for youth and teens in grades three through eight. Junior classes, for students in grades three through five, will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m.; and senior classes, for students in grades six through eight, will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. Monthly fees are $35 for YMCA members, $55 for nonmembers. Welcoming Center opening

The City of Gloucester Tourism Commission invites representatives of all tourist-related businesses and volunteers to the kick-off of the Gloucester Welcoming Center at Stage Fort Park from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3.

Orchestra holding auditions

The Northshore Youth Symphony Orchestra (NYSO) is scheduling auditions for young musicians, ages 6 to 18, who play orchestral instruments and for vocalists in grades eight to 12. NYSO serves more than 275 students from 40 towns north of Boston providing 10 ensembles: Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Intermezzo Orchestra, Overture and Prelude String Ensembles, Clarinet Choir, two flute choirs and the NYSO Chorale. NYSO will be holding auditions the week of June 8-13. Auditions may be scheduled by e-mailing our office manager at sperron.nyso@gmail.com or calling 978-578-6353.
