Gloucester goings on

Events listed here are open to the public and sponsored by nonprofit groups unless otherwise noted. Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the swim portion of the first Gloucester Triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 9. Lifeguards with current Red Cross certification and experienced ocean kayakers are especially needed to be part of the safety patrol along the swim course. Beach volunteers are also needed to help set up and break down equipment, count heads and help direct competitors out of the water. Overnight sail trip

The Gloucester Museum School is offering 20 bunks aboard the Spirit of Massachusetts to sail with local captain Amanda Madeira from SailGloucester into Sail Boston. The school will also offer a limited number of day sail tickets for July 8 and 9. The ship will depart July 8 at 8 a.m. and be overnight in the Boston Harbor Island area, with another day of sailing on July 9. Space is limited. 'Democratic Dialogue'

The Gloucester Democratic City Committee's public access television show, "Democratic Dialogue," will air on cable Channel 12 on Thursday, July 9, at 9:30 p.m. and repeat on Friday, July 10 at 4 p.m., Thursday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, July 19 at 7 p.m. and Friday, July 24, at 4 p.m. Host Monica Nardone will talk with local Democrat and environmental activist Nancy Sullivan about ways in which individuals can make their life-style more environmentally friendly. Senior coupon program

Gloucester seniors are invited to participate in the Massachusetts Farmers' Market Coupon Program, sponsored by SeniorCare Inc. and the Gloucester Council on Aging. Eligible older adults will receive $30 in coupons that are used to purchase fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables at designated farmers' markets. The Cape Ann Farmers' Market is held Thursdays, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., at Harbor Loop, until Oct. 8. A limited number of coupons are available, and will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis at the Rose Baker Senior Center, beginning Wednesday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. Seniors picking up coupons at the Senior Center may sign up for the SeniorCare luncheon. Afternoon at the movies

The Council on Aging will show free films this month at 12:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Rose Baker Senior Center. Showings are July 9, "Mall Cop," starring Kevin James and Keir O'Connell; July 16, "Gran Torino," starring Clint Eastwood and Bee Vang; July 23, "An Affair to Remember," starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr; and July 30, "Doubt," starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Youth acting workshops

Gloucester Stage Company, 267 East Main St., will hold acting workshops for children ages 6 to 17. The six-week workshops, taught by award-winning actress Heidi Dallin, will be held Fridays, beginning July 10. The workshops will help students discover their creative potential, build self-confidence and self esteem and develop communication skills, as as well as give them the opportunity to learn about the skills necessary for professional theater. The workshops will include an introduction to theater basics, including theater games, improvisation, movement, vocal and physical expression, character preparation and development, scene study, and storytelling. Computer volunteers meet

The Council on Aging computer program volunteers will meet Tuesday, July 7, 11:45 a.m., at the Rose Baker Senior Center.

COA Friends meets

The Friends of the Gloucester Council on Aging will meet Wednesday, July 8, 8 a.m., at the Rose Baker Senior Center. All members are encouraged to attend. Call 978-281-9765.

Fundraiser event

Haiti Projects Inc. will hold a sale of handmade goods from a women's cooperative in Haiti on Saturday, July 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 31 Leonard St. The sale will feature tablecloths, napkins, nightgowns, camisoles, scrubs, tote bags, sandals, sachets, knits and more.

League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Cape Ann will hold its monthly board meeting Wednesday, July 8, 10 a.m., at St. John's Church, Middle Street. All are welcome. The league is a nonpartisan political organization of women and men that encourages citizens to participate in government, especially at the grass-roots level. Rummage sales

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington St., will hold a rummage sale Saturdays, July 11, 18 and 25, and Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. The sale will feature clothing for men, women and children, as well as books, puzzles and CDs. Nisu (Finnish bread) and Anadama bread will be sold. Nisu by the slice and coffee will also be available.

Chamber Music series

The Cape Ann Summer Chamber Music Series will present a music performance Sunday, July 12, 5 p.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington St., Gloucester. Chamber music artists Susan Slowick, violin, Jonathan Knox, oboe, and Kathleen Forgac, piano, will be joined by soprano Sarah Wetzel. For tickets and information, call 978-525-3074.

Lighthouse cruise

The Thacher Island Association will hold its annual lighthouse cruise, "Lighthouses Along the North Shore and Boston," on Friday, July 17. Jeremy D'Entremont, lighthouse expert and author, will narrate the tour. A cash bar, sandwiches and snacks will be available. Liquor may not be brought on board. Cost is $30 per person. Docksiders fundraiser

The Gloucester High School Docksiders, in conjunction with Causeway Liquors on Essex Avenue, are currently holding a recycling fundraiser.¬ Bring cans and bottles to Causeway Liquors and tell them to donate the money to the GHS Docksiders. All money collected will go towards new equipment and the 2010 performance trip. Call 978-281-4644 for more information.

Cape Ann Farmers' Market

NSAA youth programs

North Shore Arts Association, 11 Pirates Lane, is now accepting registration for its 2009 Youth Education Program. Classes meet on six consecutive Tuesdays, beginning Tuesday, July 7. Children ages 8-12 meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and teens meet from 1 to 5 p.m. Children's classes are $10 per day, $15 per day for teens. New Vision Group meets

HAWC drop-in group

A HAWC (Healing Abuse Working for Change) drop-in group meets every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with child care provided. This free, confidential group is for women who have experienced emotionally or physically abusive relationships. Join other women for nonjudgmental support and education about domestic violence. Parent Connection support group

Wellspring Cape Ann Families offers a free parent support and education group twice weekly (ongoing throughout the year) for all parents and caregivers. CAMEN group

Cape Ann Thrift Shop

Cape Ann Thrift Shop, 70 Middle St., is open Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop offers clothing for the whole family, linens, toys, jewelry and more. Donations of all types are appreciated.

Open Door meals

The Open Door, 28R Emerson Ave., serves a family-style meal Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. Gloucester residents may call 978-283-6776, ext. 204, to arrange for a free van ride. The ride line must be reached before 4 p.m. to ensure a seat.

Isabel Babson Memorial Library

Isabel Babson Memorial Library, 69 Main St., is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The library, named for Gloucester's first midwife, has books featuring every aspect of family life including maternity, child care and women's health. Blue Star Banner

Capt. Lester S. Wass Post 3, American Legion, honors military personnel by presenting the parents of anyone on active duty with a Blue Star Banner. These banners may be obtained by calling 978-283-9710. Leave your name and telephone number and a representative will return your message.

Ucita Council No. 46 meets at the Red Barn, Emerson Avenue, every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Cape Ann Food Pantry

Cape Ann Food Pantry, 28R Emerson Ave., provides free food assistance Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.; Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Basic household information and a valid identification are required. The pantry also offers its Buck-A-Bag program, a weekly surplus food market that provides low-cost access to fresh (and locally grown) produce and wholesome breads, Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Call 978-283-6776.

Cape Ann Social Club

The Cape Ann Social Club provides adults with social, recreational and community activities every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 5 to 8 p.m., and Thursday and Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Members meet at various places. Cape Ann Art Haven

Cape Ann Art Haven offers family studio time every Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to bond with your children through art. Cost is $10 for the first child, $5 for each additional child. CAAH also offers classes for third- through fifth-graders Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 and 5:30 to 7 p.m. The class runs for one month and costs $60. CAAH also offers classes for sixth- through eighth-graders every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. The class runs for one month and costs $60.
