Gloucester goings on

Lyceum program postponed

The Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library's book talk with author Jean Sausele Knodt titled "Nine Thousand Straws," previously scheduled for Thursday, July 30, has been postponed until fall. Call 978-281-9763.

Hearing clinic

A free hearing clinic will be offered Monday, July 27, 9 a.m. to noon, at Rose Baker Senior Center. Joseph Sarofeen, hearing aid specialist at Rogers Hearing Solutions, offers hearing tests, family counseling, and cleaning and repairing of hearing aids at no charge. Group motorcycle rides

Motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to take part in a weekly "grub run" on Thursday nights. Participants will leave from the downtown Dunkin' Donuts at 7 p.m. The group rides for about an hour, stops to eat and rides home a different route, weather permitting. The group is usually back in Gloucester by 9:30 p.m. All are welcome. The group also schedules a Provincetown run, a Laconia run and a Kimball Farms Ice Cream run.

Food stamps screening

Cape Ann Food Pantry provides food stamps eligibility screenings with a trained outreach coordinator. Call 978-283-6776, ext. 201.

VNA Care Network

VNA Care Network, a nonprofit home health care, hospice and wellness provider, provides stipends to women with breast cancer who need financial assistance for medications, co-payments, transportation to treatment and other things that will help increase their access to treatment and support their recovery. Women must be residents of eastern or central Massachusetts to qualify. This program is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Moose Lodge meat raffle

Cape Ann Moose Lodge 1471, 262 Main St., will hold a meat raffle every Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for three for members and guests. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the lodge or the night of the raffle.

Weight Watchers meeting

A Weight Watchers meeting is held at the Gloucester Fraternity Club, 27 Webster St., every Tuesday at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Clothing donations

AMVETS Post 32 collects clothing for adults for distribution at Massachusetts veterans hospitals. New or clean used clothing in good condition is needed. Clothing may be dropped off at AMVETS Post 32, 14 Prospect St., weekdays after 10 a.m. To arrange for pickup, call Tom Glenn at 978-283-7516. AMVETS also collects flip-tops from aluminum cans for recycling. Proceeds benefit AMVETS' veterans hospital programs.

Medical insurance help

Knitting, crocheting group

Free HIV/AIDS testing

Summer programs

The Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center will offer the following summer programs:

Marine Science, for students entering grades seven through nine, meets Aug. 3 to 7, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $150 for members, $175 for nonmembers. Space is limited.

Open Lab Hours, for families with children ages 6 and older, will be held Thursdays, 1 to 3 p.m., July and August. Free for up to three family members with the price of admission.

Creature of the Week, for prekindergartners and early elementary school students, meets Thursdays, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., July and August. Children ages 3 and 4 must be accompanied by an adult. Free with the price of admission. Space is limited.

Many veterans experience difficulty in adjusting to problems they face in civilian life after having served in combat. Vacation Bible School

Raiders registration

The Raiders will be hold football and cheerleading registration at the Gloucester Police Station on Friday, July 31, 5 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 1, 10 a.m. to noon; Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 8, 10 a.m. to noon. Registration is $65 per child, with a $100 cap per family. All C team players, ages 7 to 9, play for free. Players must be 7 before Aug. 31 to be eligible to play. Viking registration

The East Gloucester Viking Youth Program will hold football and cheerleading signups in the East Gloucester School yard, by the equipment shed, on Friday, July 31, 5 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 1, 9 a.m. to noon; Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. to noon. Children must be 7 years old by Aug. 31. A copy of a birth or sports certificate is mandatory for all first time players. Cost is $80 per child, with a $160 family cap. Summer lunch program

The Open Door Summer Lunch Program will provide free lunch to children under 18 in Gloucester and Rockport. The program will run Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., until Aug. 28, at these Gloucester locations: The Open Door, YMCA, Riverdale Park, and Willowood Gardens. Art Haven summer programs

Cape Ann Art Haven will offer a variety of youth and adult art classes from now until Aug. 30. Registration is open for these programs:

Mural Painting, for grades three through eight, meets Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $100 per week or $300 per month.

Darkroom Photography, for grades five through nine, meets Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $80 per week or $280 per month.

Youth Clayworks, for grades three through five, meets Monday and Wednesday, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $10 per class, $20 per week or $60 per month.

Youth Paint and Draw, for grades three through five, meets Tuesday and Thursday, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $10 per class, $20 per week or $60 per month.

Family Studio, for all ages with an adult, meets Friday, 2:30 to 4 p.m. There is a $10 class fee, $5 for each additional child.

Open Studio, for grades five through nine, meets Monday through Friday, noon to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 per class, $40 per week or $150 per month.

Northern Essex WIC

Northern Essex WIC (Women, Infants and Children) is a nutrition program that provides nutrition and health education, healthy food and other services free of charge to Massachusetts families who qualify. The Gloucester office is in the Gloucester Family Health Center, 302 Washington St.

Adult Learning Center

Second Glance Thrift Shop

Second Glance Thrift Shop, 2 Pond Road, is open Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shop sells low-cost clothing, shoes, books, housewares, CDs, furniture, linens, jewelry, knickknacks and artwork. The donation center entrance is located at the left-hand end of the building and is open to receive clean, salable donations during regular business hours. Tax receipts are available upon request. Homebuyer workshop

The Gloucester Housing Authority, 259 Washington St., will offer a four-night workshop for first-time homebuyers Aug. 12, 19, 26 and 27, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Local guest speakers will talk about safe mortgages, credit scores, down payment grants, when to contact a realtor, home inspections, foreclosure prevention, buying foreclosed properties, legal issues, insurance and more. Handyman program for seniors

The Council on Aging will offer a new Handyman Program for seniors residents. A local retired carpenter is offering his services for inside and outside small carpentry jobs, repairs, yard work, odd jobs and furniture repairs. To set up an appointment with the handyman, call Claire at 978-281-9765.

Rebecca's story hour

A story hour will be held Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at 1123 Washington St., until Aug. 19. The program includes stories, music and arts and crafts. All parents and children are welcome.

Relay for Life fundraiser

Cape Ann Relay for Life's Team Friends for Friends is holding a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. Team members are looking for donated prom gowns, which will be offered to the general public at a sale to be held in the fall. Upcoming trips

Twin Lights Tours will attend the 24th annual "Pops by the Sea" on the Hyannis Village Green with maestro Keith Lockhart and guest conductor Angie Dickinson on Aug. 2. The trip features brunch at the Daniel Webster Inn in Sandwich Village, a tour of the Heritage Museum and Gardens, reserved seating for the Boston Pops concert and pre-concert entertainment, and transportation to and from Hyannis. From Sept. 18 to 20, the group will travel to Baltimore, Md., to attend two Boston Red Sox vs. Baltimore Orioles games. 'Stories, Songs and More'

"Stories, Songs and More," a series of storytelling programs at Stage Fort Park, will be held every Tuesday at 10 a.m., until Aug. 4. Storytellers Lucille LePage and Alicia Quintano present a festive, hourlong program of stories, songs and on-your-feet-fun for children and families. The series is supported in part by the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency; local businesses and the Sawyer Free Library. The program, which is in its 20th season, takes place near the Antonio Gentile Bandstand in good weather and on the porch of the Welcoming Center on rainy or very hot days. Free; all welcome. Evening with Tony Bennett

Cape Ann Travelers will travel to the South Shore Music Theater for an evening with Tony Bennett on Aug. 15 and 16. Holy Family Women's Guild

Cape Ann Museum, 27 Pleasant St., will offer daily guided tours led by docents trained in teaching the public about the museum's art, history and material culture collections. White-Ellery House tours

Cape Ann Museum will offer guided tours of the White-Ellery House, a First Period structure built in 1709 on Gloucester's historic Town Green (now the Grant Circle rotary) and moved to its present location at 244 Washington St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on the following days: Aug. 1, Sept. 5 and Oct. 3. NSAA auction

The North Shore Arts Association will hold its live and silent auction gala Saturday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. All live and silent auction paintings will be on display at the NSAA, and silent and absentee bidding will be open July 31 to Aug. 7, at 8 p.m. The auction event will feature passed hors d'oeuvres by Duckworth's Bistrot, an open wine bar and live music by What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? Art in the Park program

Windhover retreat

The fifth annual Windhover retreat, "Meditations on Becoming the Divine," will take place Aug. 24 to 30, 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., a the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport. 'The Breath of Life'

Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main St., presents a limited two-week engagement of David Hare's "The Breath of Life" until Aug. 2. Directed by Eric C. Engel, the production features Elliot Norton Award winners Nancy E. Carroll and Paula Plum. Performances are July 29 through Aug. 1 at 8 p.m.; Aug. 1 at 3 p.m.; and Aug. 2 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $37, $32 for senior citizens and students. Riverdale Rockets sign ups

The Riverdale Rockets will hold football and cheerleading sign ups at the O'Maley field concession stand on the following days: Friday, July 31, 5 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 1, 9 to 11 a.m.; Friday, Aug. 7, 5 to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Aug. 8, 9 to 11 a.m. All first-year players of all levels are encouraged to sign up. Youth sailing sessions

The Sail Gloucester Community Boating Center Inc. will offer morning sessions for children ages 8 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, and afternoon sessions for children ages 13 to 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. Any youth ages 8 to 18 can learn to sail for $1. Art Haven party

Cape Ann Art Haven will host an anniversary party and fundraiser Friday, July 31, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., to celebrate being open for a year and recently receiving its official tax-exempt status. A silent auction and art raffle will kick off the evening of free food and darkroom tours. Student and staff artwork will be on display. A tour will leave the studio at 5:15 p.m. to unveil two murals painted by summer program participants on Supreme Roast Beef and Cape Ann Business Incubators.

'Taming of the Shrew'

Tickets are now on sale for Theatre in the Pines' production of "The Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare. Performances will be held at the outdoor theater at Windhover in Rockport on July 31, Aug. 1, 7, 8 and 9, at 7:30 p.m., and Aug. 2 at 4 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport and at The Bookstore in Gloucester.

Brown bag program

Fish Box Derby

Seniors at the Sidewalk Bazaar

Washington, D.C. tour

Cape Ann Seniors will tour Washington, D.C., Nov. 12 to 15. Experience the new Capitol Visitors' Center, the Air and Space Museum, the Tourmobile "Ride Through History," which includes all monuments and Arlington National Cemetery, and an evening "nightlight" ride of the illuminated monuments. GHS Cheerleaders mini camp

The Gloucester High School cheerleaders mini camp will be held Aug. 4 to 6, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the high school Fieldhouse. Camp is open to all children ages 5 to 14. Cost is $75 for the first child, $60 for each additional child. Registration will be held Tuesday, July 28, 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the GHS atrium. Call Patty Marques at 978-283-7098.

Seafood Retirees meet

Kindergarten enrollment

Families who have not yet enrolled children who will be starting kindergarten in September should do so as soon as possible. As the schools are currently full, families who live in the Beeman Memorial and Plum Cove Elementary school districts should enroll through the district office, located at 6 School House Road, on Thursdays.

Gloucester Sidewalk Days

The Retail Division of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will host Gloucester Sidewalk Days on July 30 and 31 and Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The Main Street event is an evolution of the traditional Bazaar, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2008.
