Arsenian named Community Clinician of the Year

Rockport physician Michael A. Arsenian was recently named 2008 Community Clinician of the Year by the Essex South District Medical Society.

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the society's 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community.

A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and board-certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Arsenian is a private practice physician specializing in cardiology with Cape Ann Medical Center in Gloucester. He has additional certifications in nuclear cardiology, electrocardiography, and echocardiography.

A published author on cardiovascular disease, Dr. Arsenian was the recipient of the Pride in Practice Award in 1997 from Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Local nonprofits awarded grants

The Essex County Community Foundation has announced the distribution of grants totaling $25,000. The grants were awarded to agencies for a variety of purposes, including evaluation of marketing plans, an increase in fundraising efforts, implementation of a strategic plan, and strengthening of governance and fiscal management skills.

ECCF grants are awarded to strengthen nonprofit organizations across the broad areas of arts and culture, education, environment, health, social and community services, and youth services.

Grant recipients are: Andover Chamber Music Series, Andover — $3,000; Beverly Affordable Housing Coalition Inc., Beverly — $4,000; Bread & Roses Housing, Lawrence — $4,500; Kestrel Educational Adventures, Gloucester — $3,850; North Andover Historical Society, North Andover — $2,500; Salem Sound Coastwatch, Salem — $4,000; and seARTS, Cape Ann — $3,150.

Tower Foundation grants available

The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation have announced the availability of money to organizations operating preschools in Essex County to purchase age-appropriate classroom equipment and or technology for use by children ages 3 to 5 to promote the development of language and literacy skills.

Letters of application are due June 30.
