ROCKPORT — Police contacted National Grid at 2:41 p.m. Wednesday after Granite Street residents reported their power was out. National Grid determined the outage was caused by a lightning strike to a pole on Washington Street in Gloucester. Roughly 1,600 residents were without power for a couple of hours as a result of the incident.

r Police yesterday continued to investigate a reported shoplifting that occurred at 7:07 p.m. Wednesday at a shop on Bearskin Neck. According to the police report, the suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

r The Fire Department responded to a Wharf Road residence at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday for a smoke detector activation. Firefighters determined it was a false alarm triggered when power returned to the home.

r Rescuers transported a man from the corner of School and Pleasant streets to Addison Gilbert Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
