Gloucester High teen earns part in Boston theater play
A Gloucester High School sophomore will have a part in "Into The Woods," when the Boston Children's Theater's summer academy performs the repertory show tonight and through the weekend.
Katy Geraghty, 15, will play "Little Red" in the show at the theater's summer home, Governor's Academy in Byfield.
"'Into the Woods' is a collection of fairy tales that collide in the first act and what happens after the happily ever after is the second act," Geraghty said. "It's a great a show."
Geraghty and castmates auditioned and enrolled in the summer academy's intensive pre-professional training program for students interested in the profession of musical theater. Led by Broadway professionals, the five-week program includes master classes taught by professional actors, workshops led by professional educators and rehearsals for full-scale musical productions. They then auditioned for parts in several shows.
Geraghty and the cast of "Into the Woods" worked with Broadway actress Danielle Ferland in a master class last Friday in preparation for their roles. Ferland debuted the role of "Little Red" on Broadway in 1991.
"She answered a lot of questions before the class," Geraghty said. "She was 15 when she did 'Little Red,' and talked about acting when you are so young, most of us in the class were around that."
Geraghty said the students all sang songs for show for Ferland, and then she sang Little Red's song "I Know Things Now" for the actress.
"She worked with me, and the director did, too, and really helped me. Now it's a different song," Geraghty said. "She was amazing to work with."
In addition to class with Ferland, the cast spent another morning master class working directly with Jon Kimball, formerly of North Shore Music Theatre. Kimball critiqued the students as they performed various songs on-the-spot.
Geraghty said she heard about the program from friends involved in theater and from a voice teacher, who is an administrator in the program.
She has been involved in theater since she was 6, and said she hopes to have a career on stage in theater. "I'm leaning that way, but want to study TV and movies, I want to be well-rounded," she said.
Geraghty was most recently seen in the Gloucester High School spring production, "Back to the '80s," as "Lauren."
