Wife arrested for driving cab over husband's leg

By Patrick Anderson
Staff Writer

A Gloucester man, who police say tried to grab his wife inside her taxi cab, was taken to the hospital Tuesday night after she trapped his arm by rolling up the window and then drove over his leg.

The wife, 43-year-old Cynthia Sonia of 2 Broadway Ave., Rockport, was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

Sonia told police she rolled up the cab's window after her 41-year-old husband reached inside the vehicle and grabbed her throat. According to the police report, the couple are currently separated and going through divorce proceedings.

In a phone conversation yesterday, Sonia did not deny trapping her husband's arm in the car window, but said running him over was "not intentional."

She said no bones had been broken in the incident and her husband had been released from the hospital.

Police said they intended to seek a complaint against the husband for grabbing his wife's throat.

Officers responded to the husband's Chestnut Street address Tuesday night at 11:47 p.m. for a domestic dispute call and found him injured with what at the time was thought might be a broken leg.

The husband told police he had called Sonia to have her drop off his cell phone and when she arrived, he reached into the taxi she was driving to get it.

According to the police report, she rolled up the window, trapping his arm inside, then accelerated as he tried to pull his arm out of the window. He fell as he freed himself from the cab and Sonia drove over his left leg before leaving the scene, police said.

A Gloucester ambulance transported the husband to Addison Gilbert Hospital for treatment.

Police called the taxi company Sonia was driving for and had her return to the scene of the incident on Chestnut Street where she was arrested.
