Holiday Fund: Layoff puts family of six behind on their rent

By Jonathan Phelps
Correspondent

Michael and his wife, Jessica, both had full-time jobs and were able to meet the needs of their four beautiful girls. They didn't really have any savings, but they were working on it.

Life seemed to be good, until Michael was suddenly laid off. They no longer had the means they once did.

He applied for unemployment, but it took a while to receive it, and the money was far less than they were used to. They fell a little behind, and Michael swallowed his pride and went to the Salvation Army for help.

They were short about $300 for their rent, and the Salvation Army was able to pay it and offer him food from the food pantry, which he agreed would help during this tough time.

Four months later, Michael now has a new full-time job and they are catching up on their bills.

Many people need help this year: those who are out of work, parents who are ill or have a sick child, or single parents struggling to pay rent, utilities and other necessities.

Hardships and just making ends meet may mean no extra money for gifts or a holiday meal.

The Salvation Army and the Gloucester Daily Times Holiday Fund work together to help those who need a little something extra to get their lives going again, especially around the holidays when families gather. Donations go a long way to help neighbors get going again.
