Man injured in fall from Commercial Street roof

By Patrick Anderson
Staff Writer

A man who fell off the roof of the Parisi Seafood building on Commercial Street yesterday and landed on a rear deck facing the harbor was taken to the hospital with what were described by fire officials as "substantial" injuries

The Police and Fire departments last night declined to release the man's name and age.

Paramedics responded to the scene of the accident at 108 Commercial St. yesterday at 11:22 a.m. after receiving a call from someone at the building. They found the man lying on the deck. The man was transported directly to Beverly Hospital.

Gloucester fire Capt. Carol Blanchard said she did not know what caused the fall, but thought it was likely that the man slipped. She called the man's injuries "substantial," but declined to be any more specific, citing patient confidentiality.

The building is two stories high, but it was unclear to rescuers yesterday from where exactly the man fell or how high the drop was, Blanchard said.

She said the man nearly fell into the harbor, but just caught the rear deck of the building on his way down.

A woman who answered the phone at the building but declined to give her name said the man worked for a seafood company that is a tenant in the building.
