A book that is mesmerizing children of all ages was illustrated by former Rockport resident Lesley Anderson.

The 24-year-old brings to life the tale of two pigs, Gwendolyn and Omar, in David Ira Rottenburg's enchanting tale, "Gwendolyn, The Graceful Pig."

"The story captivated me," Anderson said, "that's what made me want to illustrate it."

"Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig" tells the tale of two best friends who have big dreams. Gwendolyn longs to dance ballet while Omar wants to join the football team. With the help of a strict Russian dance teacher, Natasha Levertov, both pigs are able to overcome their clumsiness and fulfill their dreams.

Since she was a child, Anderson has felt a strong tie to the arts. "Thinking back," she said, "I can't recall a single time, during my childhood, when I went an entire day without a crayon or a pencil in my hand. I loved to draw, it was almost an obsession."

As Anderson moved through school, she took all the art courses that were offered, and enrolled in an art program taught by Patty Dugan on Main Street in Gloucester.

"The program really opened her eyes to the vast and complex world of artistry," her father, Glenn Anderson, said. "That was the moment she realized the potential the field had."

Being chosen as an illustrator is not as easy as one may think.

"In my case, I had to submit a drawing of what I thought Gwendolyn should look like," Anderson said. "My picture was then put with the drawings of other artists, and showed to a group of children; it was sort of like an audition. Finally, the decision was made, and the children just happened to pick my pig."

This book is Anderson's first and promises to be an impressive starting point for the budding artist.

"Working with an artist and publishing company was really interesting," Anderson said. "Before taking on this project, I had no idea how complex the making of a children's book is."

She will also be promoting the book Dec. 6 at Hula Moon on Mount Pleasant Street, and on Dec. 13 at Rockport United Methodist Church.

Anderson is very optimistic about where this opportunity is taking her. "With the help of both the author and publisher, I've managed to turn my passion into a reality — that's all I could've asked for."
