Letter: Honoring those who preserve city's heritage

To the editor:

May is National Preservation Month, and in conjunction with it, the Gloucester Historical Commission will hold its fifth annual Preservation Awards.

These awards acknowledge individuals and organizations who during the past year have contributed to preserving Gloucester's history.

Gloucester's preservation awards differ from those of other towns. In addition to recognizing house restoration and preservation, we include books, films and research that define the city's place in the history of the United States as a seaport and as America's first art colony and document the city.

Altogether eight houses will receive awards, as well as one landscape, one education and research achievement, and seven books and films. This year there will also be a special lifetime contribution award.

It is hoped that the recognition given to these outstanding citizens will also help raise public awareness of the importance of preserving Gloucester's past to insure our future prosperity.

The Cape Ann Museum has generoulsy provided its Folly Cove Auditorium for the ceremony, to be held today at 2 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
