Year of the farmers market?

When the Cape Ann Farmers Market opens for its third full season on Harbor Loop this afternoon, it will offer more than just the chance to buy produce, seafood and other foods for farm and dock prices.

As market manager Nicole Bogin noted in yesterday's Times story, people are not only realizing that farmers markets are "the way to go" when it comes to maintaining their family's health and nutrition, but that they are also a good means of supporting local growers, seafood providers, and small businesses.

Bogin and other organizers have once again pulled together a weekly Thursday schedule that, with musical entertainment and children's events, has become a true community weekly gathering place. But, in today's economy — especially with Gloucester fishermen under virtual siege from our own government — it also gives residents a chance to stand behind and support the many tiny businesses that indeed make up the market's real soul.

Here's hoping that the Farmers Market not only enjoys a sunny debut today, but a glowing and growing 2009 season.
