May 09, 2008 12:37 am The Manchester Essex baseball team no longer has to worry about having a winless season. The young Hornets went on the road yesterday and knocked off Hamilton-Wenham, 4-3, to win their first game this spring. Manchester Essex got a strong performance on the mound from senior Ian Graham. The righty went the distance and allowed just two earned runs on two hits, while striking out seven. Freshman third baseman Alex Porter had a hit and an RBI, senior Greg Polley was 2 for 3 with a triple and junior Zeke Gillette was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Manchester Essex jumped out to a 4-1 lead through the first five innings and survived a two-run home run from Hamilton-Wenham in the sixth. The Hornets, who only have three seniors on the roster, started three freshmen in the infield. "This was an awesome game," said Manchester Essex manager Frank Morrissey, whose team is now 1-11. "We have been calling up a lot of freshmen to varsity and giving the younger guys a chance to play. The team seems to be responding." Rockport 15, Ipswich 5 The Vikings (7-5) pounded 16 hits as a team en route to the easy win. Matt Hendy had a terrific game, pitching the distance and allowing just four hits, while fanning six. He also added two hits and three RBIs. Derek Osmond (two hits, two RBIs), Cory Emerson (three hits, two RBIs) and Dave Campbell (two hits, three runs) also had strong performances at the plate.
