Fishermen pick up vital road win

BASEBALL

Gloucester 8, Winthrop 3

At the start of a tough week with four games in it, Fishermen senior pitcher Kyle Habecker gave his teammates and coaches exactly what they needed: quality innings.

"It was a very solid performance," said Gloucester (7-6) head coach Joe Orlando about Habecker. "He kept them off-balance and most importantly, he ate up the innings."

Habecker went six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out five to earn the win.

In its fourth straight win, Gloucester's lineup was very productive from top to bottom as junior Trevor Curley, junior Ross Carlson (RBI triple) and senior Zak Kendall all contributed two hits. Junior Taylor Burbine had a two-run single while Dylan Maki cranked an RBI triple. Finally, senior Andrew Fulford also added an RBI single.

The win was all the more impressive considering that Winthrop (9-3) crushed Gloucester, 14-1, back on April 14 in the second game of the season.

Orlando noted, "they beat us handily the first time around, it wasn't one of our shining moments. Today, the kids were pretty determined to get a win on the road."

Rockport 3, Wilmington 2 (8 innings)

Extra innings seem to suit the Vikings (8-5, 5-4) well as they won their third game in a row, two of which have come in extra frames. Senior pitcher Cory Emerson pitched all eight innings on Saturday, striking out seven with only one walk to earn the win. Senior shortstop Derek Osmond was the other star with two hits, two RBIs and a couple outstanding plays defensively.

North Andover 7, Manchester Essex 0

On Saturday, Zeke Gillette had two hits and Ryan Brewster had a hit for the Hornets, who dropped to 1-12. Freshman pitcher Max Houle was solid in relief.

SOFTBALL

North Andover 6, Manchester Essex 2

Lindsey Cambridge (2 for 3 with an RBI), Alex Zager (2 for 4 with an RBI triple) and Rebecca Lynch (2 for 3) all had multiple hits for the Hornets (4-9) while Mayeve Cullinane also notched a hit. Breezy DiPietro added a double but just missed out on a leadoff home run as the wind pushed her drive barely foul.

Wilmington 5, Rockport 0

Junior pitcher Tia Nelson struck out six for the Vikings (4-9) but her team's offense could never get untracked. Ali Bouchard, Laura Donnelly and Kelsey Keough (double) all notched hits while catcher Rebeccah Tibert threw out two runners. Ali McManus and Kaitlyn Keough each had nice defensive plays as Rockport survived a bases-loaded threat from Wilmington in the seventh without allowing a run.

BOYS LACROSSE

Medford 9, Manchester Essex 7

Jim Finn had a hat trick but the Hornets (2-6) still fell on the road. Will Doucette notched two goals while Trevor Morrero and Dylan Parlee scored the other goals.

Gloucester 9, Pentucket 2

Senior midfielder Adam Quinn had four goals to lead the Fishermen (7-7) to the win. Senior midfielder Marc Buotte (2 goals, 1 assists), freshman attackman Geoff Kennedy (3 assists), junior midfielder Jared Toye (1 goal and assist), senior attackman Jeremy Fanning (1 goal) and junior midfielder Alex Frontiero (1 goal) also had points. Junior defenseman Dylan Morrissey was a force on ground balls in his first game back from an injury.

BOYS TENNIS

Winthrop 4, Gloucester 1

Chris Lufkin (6-4, 6-3) moved up to No. 1 singles for the day and ended up taking home the lone point for the Fishermen (4-7).

GIRLS TENNIS

Gloucester 5, Winthrop 0

The Fishermen (8-3) dominated at home as Olivia Lufkin (6-0, 6-0), Lauren Davis (6-0, 6-0) and Mary Unis (6-3, 6-1) swept the singles matches. In doubles, Meg Munez-Emily Philpott (6-2, 6-0) and Leila Gaston-Pam Tobey (7-5, 6-2) each won in straight sets.
