Local sports briefs

Coaches

Coaches are asked to call the Gloucester Daily Times sports department, at 978-283-7000, ext. 3450, to report results and box scores from each night's games. Please call as early as possible after the game concludes.

Soccer

The 26th annual Cape Ann Soccer School will be held at the O'Maley School in Gloucester from July 6-9. The regular camp (age 7-17) runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the kinder camp (age 5-6) runs from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, please call David Curley at 978-281-0362.

Baseball

Basketball

The 12th annual High School Players Camp for boys will be held July 13-17 at Wakefield High School. The camp is directed by former North Reading High coach Barry Kipnes and current Wakefield High coach Brad Simpson. Softball

The Cape Ann Industrial Softball League is holding its annual one pitch tournament Sat. July 18 and Sun. July 19. The tournament this year will feature the use of wooden bats only. Openings are still available. Contact Bob Brazier at 978-283-1392 for more information.

Swimming

The Surviving the Triathlon Swim, Gloucester's first ever, open water swim clinic will be Sun. July 19 from 6 to 8 pm at Niles Beach. Instructors: pro triathlete Janda Ricci-Munn; triathlete Craig Lewin; Dr. David Swenson, president of NEMSA and Richie Martin, race director of Celebrate the Clean Harbor swim. Topics to be covered include: prepartion, starting, pack swimming, sighting, drafting, passing, turning and exiting the water. Also tips on wetsuit removal and transition. Registration ($20) opens at 5 pm at Niles Beach. Proceeds will benefit Wellspring, the Pine Street Inn and to help offset local Gloucester High School athletic user fees.
