WNBA suspends 10 players and Mahorn

The WNBA swiftly suspended the Detroit and Los Angeles players and Shock assistant coach Rick Mahorn for their role in a skirmish at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Shock forward Plenette Pierson was suspended for four games for initiating and escalating the altercation in what was the harshest penalty.

Mahorn was suspended for two games as were Shannon Bobbitt and Murriel Page of the Sparks.

Players suspended for one game included: Detroit's Kara Braxton, Tasha Humphrey, Elaine Powell and Sheri Sam along with Los Angeles' Lisa Leslie, Candace Parker and DeLisha Milton-Jones.

WNBA president Donna Orender issued a statement that said the events Tuesday were inexcusable and were not indicative of what the league stands for.

Pro hockey: Bruins grab St. Pierre in trade with Blackhawks

The Boston Bruins have swapped forwards with the Chicago Blackhawks, getting Martin St. Pierre in exchange for Pascal Pelletier.

St. Pierre played five games with the Blackhawks last season and spent the most time with Chicago's AHL affiliate Rockford. He led the team in scoring, finishing with 21 goals and 67 assists in 69 games.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said St. Pierre will provide depth at the center position.

Pelletier played in six games last season with Boston. He had scored 71 goals in 206 regular season games with Providence of the AHL between 2005-08.

Pro football: Disgusted Boldin says he won't re-sign with Cards

Arizona star wide receiver Anquan Boldin says the Cardinals lied to him about a new contract and that he has no desire to re-sign with the organization.

Boldin, a two-time Pro Bowl player and a team captain last season, said that he was promised a new contract before this season, and has directed his agent to stop negotiations with the team.

Pro basketball: Prison for gamblers linked to disgraced NBA ref

A professional gambler linked to disgraced referee Tim Donaghy will spend over a year in prison for his role in the betting scandal that rocked the NBA.

James Battista was sentenced in New York to 15 months in prison for making bets based on inside tips.

Another defendant, Thomas Martino, also was sentenced for paying the referee thousands of dollars for the tips.

The three men attended high school together in Springfield, Pa.

Pro baseball: Red Sox option OF Moss to Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox have optioned outfielder Brandon Moss to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Red Sox said they would fill Moss' roster spot prior to the start of a weekend series with the New York Yankees. The team was expected to activate David Ortiz after the slugger completed a six-game minor league rehab stint.

Ortiz has been on Boston's disabled list since May 30 with a wrist injury.

Moss has appeared in 34 games in three different stints with the major league club this season, posting a .295 average with 2 homers and 11 RBIs.

AL roundup: Halladay completes Blue Jays' sweep of Orioles

Roy Halladay scattered seven hits over seven innings, leading Toronto over the Orioles, 7-1, after the Blue Jays won a game suspended one night earlier.

In the suspended game, halted by rain in the sixth inning Wednesday, a strong performance by Toronto's bullpen preserved a 5-1 victory for A.J. Burnett.

NL roundup: Delgado's hit lifts Mets to win over Phillies

Carlos Delgado hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning and Oliver Perez stifled the Phillies again, helping the Mets earn a 3-1 win that gave them sole possession of first place in the NL East. Perez struck out 12 in 72/3 innings, and Billy Wagner got three outs for his second save in as many days. ... Matt Cain pitched a four-hitter, Dave Roberts singled home a run in the eighth inning and the Giants earned their first three-game home sweep of the season Thursday with a 1-0 win over the Nationals.

Olympic basketball: James likely out for US exhibition against Canada

U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski says injured forward LeBron James is a "95 percent no-go" for today's exhibition against Canada.

James, who has a mild right ankle sprain, was held out of a scrimmage for the second straight day, although he did participate in five-on-none drills.

"He hasn't had contact," Krzyzewski said. "We're better off giving him a few days."

Olympics: IOC says no Iraq team will go to Beijing

The International Olympic Committee says Iraq will not compete at Beijing because of Iraqi government interference.

The IOC suspended Iraq's national Olympic committee in June after Baghdad dismissed elected officials and installed its own people who are not recognized by the IOC.

The IOC Charter forbids political interference in the Olympic movement.

Tour de France: Burghardt wins 18th stage

Marcus Burghardt of Germany has won the 18th stage of the Tour de France, while Carlos Sastre of Spain appears to have maintained the overall lead.

Burghardt and Carlos Barredo of Spain finished with more than a nine-minute lead on the main pack, including the top title contenders, after the 122-mile ride from Bourg-d'Oisans to Saint-Etienne.

Sastre had started the stage 1 minute, 24 seconds ahead of Frank Schleck of Luxembourg.

College golf: Rudy Giuliani's son sues Duke over dismissal

The son of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is suing Duke University, claiming he was wrongfully kicked off the golf team.

Andrew Giuliani claims he was dismissed without cause from the golf team earlier this year because coach O.D. Vincent III wanted to cut the team from 13 players to about half its size. The lawsuit claims the coach ruined Giuliani's dream of becoming a professional golfer.
