Note: Statistics are based on players from The Salem News and Gloucester Times coverage areas only.

BY THE NUMBERS

The North Shore's highest yards per carry running back among those with at least 100 yards rushing is sitting at 13.1. Don't bother to scour the stats above to find him, though, because he's not there. The owner of that gaudy average? Peabody fullback Kevin Bettencourt, who has run for 196 yards on just 15 carries.

Games to watch

Salem (3-1) at Winthrop (1-3) tonight at Miller Field, 7 p.m.: On paper, this one looks lopsided. Salem is a Northeastern Conference Large team that is off to a 3-1 start; Winthrop, meanwhile, plays out of the NEC Small and has just one win in four starts.

Clearly this is more evidence that looks can be deceiving. The Vikings opened the season with a two-touchdown loss to league powerhouse Gloucester, then defeated Auburn. Winthrop's last two losses came by a combined four points against Lynn Classical (7-6) and Lynn English (31-28). Salem is coming off its first setback, a 47-26 loss at the hands of Swampscott.

¢¢¢

Swampscott (3-1) at Gloucester (4-0) tonight at Newell Stadium, 7 p.m.: How's this for a stat: Gloucester has outscored its last two opponents, 102-6. Only four games into the season, Gloucester has shown that it has to be considered the favorite to win the NEC Large again.

Speaking of favorites, Swampscott is also making a strong case that it is the team to beat in the NEC Small. Last year the Big Blue played Gloucester tough, but lost 21-14. Swampscott would love nothing more than ending the Fishermen's 18-game win streak.

¢¢¢

Hamilton-Wenham (3-1) at Wilmington (4-0) tonight at Wilmington High School, 7 p.m.: The 3-1 Generals have aspirations of capturing the Cape Ann League Small division title and earning a postseason berth, but before they get into that portion of their schedule they still have one more tuneup.

Wilmington has been sharp so far, winning games against Belmont, Shawsheen, Lexington and Lynnfield. A road win for Hamilton-Wenham could be the perfect confidence boost before hitting the CAL Small teams.
