Hornets win first Old Cape Ann Classic

The Manchester Essex and Rockport golf team finished the regular season with the first ever Old Cape Ann Classic tournament.

Ipswich was also included in the tri-match, which didn't count towards the conference standings in the Cape Ann League. In the end, it was the Hornets (6-9) winning with 143 points, while Rockport (5-11) was second with 137 and Ipswich was third with 121 points. The medalist was Rockport senior Paul Robinson with 31 points.

Manchester Essex got strong performances from Connor Howlett (30 points) and Mike Dodge (27 points), while Rockport's Jeff Piraino had a 29-point showing.

FIELD HOCKEY

GLOUCESTER 2, REVERE 0

The Fishermen (9-3-2) received a goal and an assist from Kat LaCroix while Alicia Clayton tallied the other goal. Freshman goalie Hannah Verga made six saves to earn the shutout.

GIRLS SOCCER

HAMILTON-WENHAM 2, MANCHESTER ESSEX 1

Julia Martz scored on a penalty kick for the Hornets, who dropped to 1-10. Skylar Coons and Sarah Kirker were all over the placed for Manchester Essex.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Marblehead 23, Gloucester 38

It was the first loss for Gloucester (4-2) on its home course since September 1991. Caulin Rogers, in second place, was the first finisher for Gloucester with a personal best on the Ravenswood Course of 15:29.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

MARBLEHEAD 20, GLOUCESTER 39

Abbie Rogers continued to run well for Gloucester (4-2) with a solid win, but Marblehead took the next seven places. Brittany Diamond was ninth and Emily Powers was 11th.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY

O'Maley boys, girls top Revere

The O'Maley boys' cross country team moved to 6-0 with a 15-50 win over Revere at Belle Isle Reservation in Revere last Wednesday. The boys captured 12 of the top 15 places, with Winslow Powers, Ian Richards, Jacob Holscher, Noah Mondello, Brian and Victor Matos, Curtis Quinn, D. J. Sudbay and Matt Lane sweeping the first nine places.

Led by Elle Wierbicky's and Bianca Giacaleone's second and third-place finishes, the O'Maley girls improved to 2-4 on the season with a 23-38 win over Revere. Sophie Black, Qiana Curcuru, Justina Catarino, Katie Ciaramitaro, Annie Alto, Melodie Orrell and Corrine DeLouise took nine of the top 11 places.
