After going 11-4-3 overall in the regular season and finishing just one point behind powerful Lynnfield for the Cape Ann League Small title, the Rockport boys soccer team is starting to rack up the accolades right before their postseason begins.
Recently, junior goalkeeper Keady Segel was named the CAL Small Player of the Year. In addition, sophomore defender AJ Burnham was named All-League while senior midfielder Mike Emerson and junior midfielder Shaffy Roell were members of the All-Star team. Vikings head coach Dave Curley was the CAL Small Coach of the Year as well.
"I'm proud of the award," said Curley after Rockport's regular season finale against North Reading on Tuesday. "It's a reflection of the team's results and the hard work they've put in."
According to Curley, in the meeting of all CAL coaches, Segel was a unanimous selection to the All-League team and he was the third-highest vote-getter of all CAL teams (Small and Large), behind North Andover senior midfielder Gareth Dudney (who was the CAL Large Player of the Year) and Masconomet senior striker John Miller.
The Manchester Essex boys team had a trio named to the All-Star team: senior defender Greg Doyle, senior goalkeeper Matt Graves and senior midfielder Matt Xavier. The Hornets also captured the team Sportsmanship Award for the CAL Small.
On the girls side, Rockport senior midfielder Laura Donnelly made the All-League team while classmate Lauren McKechnie was an All-Star defender. Manchester Essex senior midfielder Julia Martz was an All-Star while her classmate Skylar Coons was an All-Star defender. Meanwhile, the Rockport girls team earned the team Sportsmanship Award in the CAL Small.
