MINNEAPOLIS — Livan Hernandez won again, Craig Monroe contributed another big hit, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 last night to win the four-game series.
Manny Ramirez finally went deep, hitting career homer No. 498 in the first inning for the Red Sox. The two-run shot was his second home run in 20 games.

GLOUCESTER — The Gloucester softball team got just about everything they needed to win yesterday's matchup with Winthrop.
The Fishermen received a solid start from pitcher Jill Lukegord, good defense and a number of tough at-bats against one of the Northeastern Conference's top pitchers in Kristen Finn. Gloucester even entered the seventh inning with a one-run lead.

Case in point: Gloucester native and wide body tight end, Jonathan Loyte, who wasn't offered a contract after appearing at Tampa Bay's rookie orientation camp. He has the size (6-foot-5, 268 pounds) and speed and came out of Boston College after starting out at Vanderbilt. Prior to his college career, Loyte had a great four years at St. John's Prep.

Twellman scores game-winner for Revs

CARSON, Calif. — Taylor Twellman scored in the 59th minute in his 2008 debut to lift the New England Revolution to a 2-1 win over Chivas USA yesterday.
Twellman had been sidelined after having successful surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee April 2. It was the Revolution's first-ever win on the road at Chivas USA. New England had been 0-2-1 against the Goats on the West Coast.

The Manchester Essex baseball team no longer has to worry about having a winless season.
The young Hornets went on the road yesterday and knocked off Hamilton-Wenham, 4-3, to win their first game this spring. Manchester Essex got a strong performance on the mound from senior Ian Graham. The righty went the distance and allowed just two earned runs on two hits, while striking out seven.

Particularly the 4x400 relay team of Rebecca MacDougal, Isabel Pett, Abbie Rogers and Brittany Diamond.
Locked up in a tight meet with Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon at Peabody High School, the hopes of a Gloucester victory rested on the shoulders of the aforementioned quartet in the day's final event.

Kobe Bryant added another honor to go with his MVP award, becoming the only unanimous selection to the All-NBA team.
The Lakers star was voted to the first team for the third straight season and sixth time in his career. He led Los Angeles to the best record in the Western Conference and was presented with the MVP trophy Wednesday before helping the Lakers to a 120-110 victory over Utah in Game 2 of the conference semifinals.

Seventh-grader Collens leading the way for surprising Hornets

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Manchester Essex girls tennis team.
After graduating their No. 1, 2 and 3 singles players last year, the Hornets appeared to be unlikely to duplicate 2007's 13-2 record and trip to the Division 2 North semifinals. But who would've thought a seventh-grader would show up to tryouts in March and help save the day?

Extra-innings drama helps Rockport climb over .500

BOSTON — LeBron James says he won't miss baskets like he did in the series opener between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics. Neither, James believes, will Paul Pierce or Ray Allen.
James missed all but two of his 18 shots from the field Tuesday night in Cleveland's 76-72 loss, including a layup that would have tied it with 9 seconds remaining. Pierce and Allen also went a combined 2 for 18, with Allen failing to score for the first time in 852 games.
