GLOUCESTER and mdash; The Gloucester football team just loves to play defense.
"We have a ton of pride in our defense," Gloucester senior captain Gus Margiotta said. "We are a high energy group and we bring it in practice. Our defensive practices are physical and intense."

Can Notre Dame recruit a coach who wins?

Charlie Weis still has a job, even if he thinks he doesn't deserve it. Urban Meyer has one, too, and he's planning on keeping it as long as the welcome mat stays out at Florida.
That shouldn't be a problem for Meyer because his team plays for national championships. Notre Dame doesn't anymore, and that almost surely means Weis will be out of work in the very near future, just like the coaches who went before him.

Week 11 I Beat Burt winners announced

After a three-week struggle, sports columnist Bill Burt had his "A" game back for NFL Week 11.
Burt had 12 winners in 15 pro football games last weekend. Of the 301 entries last week, only 15 picked more winners than Burt did. And if Tennessee had not upset Houston on Monday night, there would have been only four winners.

Patriots going to Superdome for first time since Super Bowl

FOXBOROUGH and mdash; The New England Patriots are heading back to New Orleans for the first time since they won the Super Bowl there.
They don't expect to spend a lot of time reminiscing.
"There's certainly a lot of fond memories for Super Bowl 36 there, but the Saints will bring it back to reality quickly," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said yesterday. "It's nice to reflect, but really there's so much in front of us in getting ready for the Saints. It's a big job here. I think we're going to have to turn our attention to that. We already have very quickly."

Gloucester gets seven all-stars, Ressel Offensive MVP

It comes as no surprise that the team that dominated Northeastern Conference football this fall also dominated the NEC All-Star list, which was released by the league yesterday.
With a perfect 10-0 record and Division 1A playoff berth secure going into today's Thanksgiving Day clash with rival Danvers at Newell Stadium (10 a.m.), the Fishermen earned an NEC-high seven all-star nods, as selected by the league's coaches at a meeting last week.

It runs in the family: Fishermen carrying on legacies of years past

The years change for the Gloucester High School football team, but it seems like the names on the back of the jerseys often stay the same.
In this Cape Ann city, it's all about the three F's and mdash; fishing, Fiesta and of course football. Pigskin tradition is something passed down from generation to generation, and being a member of the Fishermen football team is considered an honor with each member of the squad hoping to carry on the legacy left from relatives who also played in the program.

NEC champion Gloucester faces much-improved Danvers team

The Gloucester High football team is hoping this year's 60th annual Thanksgiving Day clash with Danvers tomorrow (10 a.m., Newell Stadium) does not mirror last year's contest, or at least the start.
In last year's matchup at Dr. Deering Stadium in Danvers, the one-win Falcons came out fired up and gave the Northeastern Conference Large champion Fishermen a run for their money in the first half trailing just 14-10 after one and 17-10 at the break.

Hornets ready for one last game

MANCHESTER - For a high school athlete, the abrupt nature of senior year is always hard. Years of endless practices, bus rides and games boil down to one final game. It happens to everyone.
"You try to tell kids that at the high school level (how quickly it goes by) and it's almost so repetitive every year," laughed Manchester Essex football coach Mike Athanas at practice on Monday. "I can't tell you how many kids have come back to me and said it, as a young kid you don't realize how fast it is. Like I told them at the beginning of the year, 'the whole year is going to go fast.'"
It is most poignant for football players on Thanksgiving morning. Your team plays your fiercest rival in front of the biggest crowd of the season. Unless you're lucky enough to go to the playoffs, that's it.

You would be hard-pressed to find a more productive player in the North Shore over the past three years than Brian Ciccone.
The Manchester Essex senior captain and running back has led the Hornets to a 30-5 record over the past three seasons including two playoff appearances and the 2008 Division 4 Super Bowl championship.
