With no luck selling Zsa Zsa Gabor's home, her husband, Frederic Prinz von Anhalt, has turned to another possible form of income: renting out the mammoth estate.
According to TMZ, von Anhalt isn't renting out the estate at 1001 Bel Air Rd. to just anyone; he's struck a deal with the producers behind a new HBO film by Steven Soderbergh called "Behind the Candelabra." The film documents the life of Liberace and stars Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe and Matt Damon. Production is set to start this summer, with at least 23 days inside Gabor's mansion.
The Bel Air home is currently listed for $14.9 million, and TMZ reports that Gabor and von Anhalt will rake in at least $70,000 to rent out the home. However, it's not likely enough to cover growing debts due to Gabor's medical bills and a foreclosure notice put on the home earlier this year.
The past few years have been rough for Gabor. She was in a car accident in 2002, had a stroke in 2005 and underwent hip surgery in 2010. In 2011 her right leg was partially amputated due to complications from the surgery. Although she's owned the home since 1974, von Anhalt has taken out reverse mortgages on the property to pay for Gabor's care. According to the LA Times, von Anhalt has not been making payments.
The 8,878-square-foot property has 6 bedrooms, 7 baths and several indoor/outdoor entertaining spaces. An enormous master suite, pool, grand salon and formal dining room round out the rest of the celebrity home.
At one point Gabor claimed that she bought the home from Elvis Presley, and while that statement was debunked as myth, the home has hosted both political and Hollywood elites, such as Ronald Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and both former Presidents Bush: George H.W. and George W. Prior to Gabor's ownership, the home was rented out to recluse Howard Hughes for most of the 1960s.
