Cape Ann's Junior League (13 and 14 year old) All-Stars will be competing for a sectional championship this weekend after avoiding elimination on Thursday night.
Cape Ann, which is comprised of All-Stars players from Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex, needed a win over Stoneham to stay alive in the tournament on Thursday night at Nate Ross Field, and delivered a 7-5 victory to advance to the Section 2 Finals.
With the win, Cape Ann will travel to Canton on Saturday night at Kennedy Middle School (6 p.m.). Canton is 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament and Gloucester is 1-1, falling to Canton, 2-1 in the tournament opener for both teams. That means Cape Ann will have to beat Canton twice in a row to win the section.
If Cape Ann can pull off a win on Saturday night, it will host a winner-take-all sectional final on Sunday at Nate Ross Field (time TBA).
The Section 2 finals is a rematch of the 2017 sectional final, which was won by Canton.
The sectional champ will advance to the state tournament, which takes place next week in Oxford.
