Four-point third quarter dooms Rockport in loss

Everything was lining up perfectly for the Rockport boys basketball team in what has so far been a tough season. After beating Essex Aggie on Wednesday, picking up its first win the process, the Vikings looked like they were in control against visiting Triton last night and were about to embark on their first win-streak.

Rockport (1-10) led 26-20 at the half but a four-point third quarter sealed their fate en route to a 46-42 loss to the Wildcats (2-12).

"In the third quarter, Triton switched from a man defense to a zone," said Rockport head coach Tim St. Laurent. "We took good shot after good shot but we kept missing. Cold can't describe how poorly we shot in that quarter."

Junior forward Mike Akers and sophomore center Noah Lauredant were bright spots in the loss for Rockport.

"Akers was running the point and he would get the top two guys in their zone to collapse and he'd kick it to the wing. The shots just weren't falling," admitted St. Laurent. "Noah contained their big guy who's 6-foot-5 and is their main player. We defended well, we should have got the win."

Despite the result, St. Laurent lauded his team's attitude. "The kids stayed positive, the shots just weren't falling. We're normally a very good shooting team," St. Laurent noted. "The ball was not going down tonight. We mixed up every combination of players in the lineup but nothing seemed to change it. We couldn't put the ball in the ocean, it wasn't our night. We just gotta put it behind us."

Next, Rockport travels to Ipswich on Tuesday night for a Cape Ann League game with the Tigers.
