The Manchester Essex Mariners finished up Sunday’s game one Intertown Twilight Baseball League playoff tilt with Ipswich scoring 20 runs over their final two at-bats en route to a 22-9 win. In game two Monday the Mariners picked up right where they left off putting on an offensive clinic to the tune of a 13-2 win over the Ipswich Chiefs.
With the win the Mariners sweep the best-of-three series 2-0 and will move on to the ITL Finals where they will meet the winner of the semifinal series between Rowley and Beverly. Rowley, who topped the Mariners in the 2011 ITL Finals, led the series 1-0 heading into Tuesday’s game two in Beverly.
Like they did in game one, the Chiefs broke out to an early lead thanks to a first inning home run, but it was all Mariners from there on in. Rory Gentile and Mike Cain each had three hits for the Mariners while Peter Clark picked up the win on the mound going five innings out of the bullpen.
Game one of the ITL Finals is on Saturday at Memorial Field in Essex (2:00 p.m.). The Mariners will hit the road Sunday.
Manchester Essex is looking for its fifth ITL title over the last six seasons. The Mariners won three straight titles from 2008-2010 and won again in 2012.
