According to multiple reports the Red Sox are close to signing a new contract with designated hitter David Ortiz. This new deal will reportedly be a two year contract with a rumored $25 million. Ortiz has been on a series of one year contracts with the Sox over the last several seasons and it has worked out as the aging slugger has stayed motivated and put up big numbers when healthy.
In fact, the last time Ortiz had a disappointing season was the last year he was on the front end of a two year contract.
Ortiz was having a big season in 2012 until injuries kept him out for most of the season’s second half.
San Francisco Giants infielder Marco Scutaro was named the NLCS MVP Monday after his team’s game 7 win over St. Louis, a win that clinched a berth in the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. This has to be a tough blow for Red Sox fans watching a player who was mediocre in Boston during the 2011 season come up with 14 hits in the NLCS.
The Red Sox traded Scutaro this offseason, he was replaced in the infield by the recently traded Mike Aviles, who also put up mediocre numbers. Scutaro was a midseason acquisition for the Giants, who got him in a trade with Colorado.
”When we acquired Scutaro, a great job by Brian Sabean, making that blockbuster deal, as we say, that’s his nickname,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “I knew he was a good player. But to see him day in, day out, you really appreciate the talent that this guy has. I don’t know if it was possible for him to raise his game, that’s how well he’s played, his level. But he did after that slide.”
The World Series begins tonight in San Francisco (8:00 p.m.) where Barry Zito of the Giants will square off with Justin Verlander of the Tigers. Both teams come into the series playing great baseball. The Giants won the World Series in 2010 while the Tigers last made it to the World Series in 2006, where they fell to the Cardinals.
This year the title comes back to the American League, the Tigers lineup is too potent and starting pitching is to deep. The Tigers win the series in six games on the back of two wins from Verlander.
