Area Roundup: Rockport boys crowned CAL Small champs

Boys Soccer

Rockport 1 Lynnfield 1

With a 1-1 draw against Lynnfield on Tuesday, the Rockport boys soccer team clinched the Cape Ann League Small title.

With the tie Rockport (11-4-2) has 20 points in CAL play, three ahead of Lynnfield, who can only get two more points with one game remaining.

“It was a good effort today from a tired and banged-up team,” Vikings head coach Dave Curley said.

“The team was a tired bunch but they fought through it and now they’re CAL small champions.”

Shaun Aspesi scored the Vikings lone goal off of a set piece from a dead ball strike wide left of the Lynnfield goal. Jacob Rostowski played well in goal for the Vikings.

Manchester Essex 2 Ipswich 0

The Hornets kept the momentum going after Monday’s win over Rockport with a shutout win over Ipswich improving their record to 6-7-3. With two games remaining at Georgetown on Thursday and against Whittier Tech on Friday, the Vikings will need three points to qualify for the postseason, meaning they can not afford another loss.

“We can’t lose, it’s as simple as that,” Hornets head coach Rob Bilsbury said.

“We are focusing on one match at a time, Thursday we are going up to Georgetown and we are going to bring it.”

Parker Edington gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead early in the second half burying a rebound after a Liam Aldrich shot hit the post. With 10 minutes left in the contest Manchester Essex got a little insurance when Pat Hagar hit Tao Sardonicus with a long pass, the latter finished the job to give the team a 2-0 lead.

Chris Xavier continues to play well in goal for the Hornets while Will Nadai also played a good game on Tuesday.

Danvers 3 Gloucester 1

The Fishermen fall to 6-9-2 and are now officially eliminated from tournament contention.
