Crunch Time

Big Game

Alert@text1:

The Manchester Essex boys soccer team is still fighting for its postseason life. At 6-7-3 the Hornets need three points over their final two games and it starts this afternoon at Georgetown (3:45 p.m.). Manchester Essex can afford no less than a tie to keep its Division 3 state tournament hopes alive.

The last time the two teams met they battled to a draw in a game that the Hornets controlled from start to finish. Georgetown got the game tying goal with less than 10 minutes to play in the contest.

Manchester Essex is peeking at the right time fresh off the heels of a two game winning streak against CAL Small champs Rockport and Ipswich.

Player of

the Week@text1:

Devin McCourty’s key fourth quarter fumble on a kick return during the Patriots 29-26 overtime win over the Jets on Sunday was not enough to keep him from being recognized by the NFL.

The Patriots defensive back and kick returner was named the AFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday on the back of his 104 yard kickoff return for a touchdown, a touchdown that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.

Although he nearly cost his team the game in the fourth when is aforementioned fumble helped the Jets secure a go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady and the Pats battled back to tie the game late in the fourth and win in overtime letting McCourty off the hook.

Isles on the move

The Brooklyn Nets are soon going to have company in the New York City borough, the New York Islanders of the NHL are planning to make the move from Long Island to Brooklyn.

The team announced Wednesday that it is moving to Brooklyn to play its home games at the Barclays Center, where the Nets play, beginning in the 2015-2016 season.

The Islanders will remain the New York Islanders and the team’s logo will not change.
