Crunch Time

Gloucester Daily Times

---- — Fiesta Weekend

St. Peter’s Fiesta still has two more days of sporting events beginning this morning with a crew from the US Coast Guard squaring off with a crew from the US Navy in a seine boat race off of Pavilion Beach (10:00 a.m.).

Following the military seine boat race is the Saturday greasy pole and men’s seine boat qualifying race starting at 4:45 p.m. at Pavilion Beach. The top two finishers in Saturday’s seine boat race will move on to the championship race Sunday to meet a waiting Closing Time, 2012 champ.

This afternoon Wednesday winners Kaos, Vincent Orlando’s crew and Paul Giacalone’s crew will meet. It was Giacalone’s crew that came away victorious in Thursday’s “make-up” race. Wednesday’s controversial first heat was pushed to Thursday after a false start. While Giacalone’s crew was beat by Andy Orlando’s gang on Wednesday, the race did not count because both crews were ruled to have a false start, which left Billy Edmonds’ crew at the beach.

Wary of Olynyk

Count me is as one who was not impressed with the Celtics acquiring Kelly Olynyk in a draft day deal with Dallas. Sure Olynyk was excellent at the college level, but his game leaves a lot to be desired.

He definitely has the athleticism and solid touch for a big man, and he played for a winning program in Gonzaga, but he is downright soft. Olynyk will struggle in the dirty areas of the floor, the same areas where the Celtics struggled last season.

Olynyk can make things happen on offense that’s for sure, but the Celtics don’t need another guy that’s going to be pushed around in the paint, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen to Olynyk in the NBA.

Classy Blackhawks

It was hard to find any reason to hate on the Chicago Blackhawks during their epic Stanley Cup victory of the Bruins, and the organization has now made it impossible to harbor any ill feelings towards the team no matter how heartbreaking the defeat was for Boston.

On Friday the Blackhawks organization took out a full page ad in the Boston Globe thanking the Bruins organization for a great series and the Boston fans for being so classy.

It turns out the Blackhawks aren’t just a likable, honest, and obviously great team on the ice, they are just as classy off the ice.
