---- — Semis postponed

The Manchester Essex girls tennis team will have to wait two extra days to play Cohasset in the Division 3 State Seminfinals.

The battle of top seeded, unbeaten teams was postponed on Monday and will now be played on Wednesday at Newton North High School (3:00 p.m.).

The matchup is a highly anticipated affair between two of the states best. Manchester Essex, the No. 1 seed in the North section, enters with a 20-0 record while Cohasset, the top seed in the South section, enters at 21-0.

The winner moves on to the Division 3 State Championship game against the winner of the other state semifinal match between Central champion Sutton and West champion Monument Mountain.

Straight to jail

Chad Johnson has made a career out of being a jokester. But on Monday his joking around got him thrown in jail for a month.

Johnson was in court Monday on charges of violating his probation, he reached a plea deal that would keep him out of jail. But Johnson angered Judge Kathleen McHugh after slapping his lawyer, who had just given the judge the plea agreement, on the rear end. The judge lashed out at Johnson before rejecting the plea agreement and sentencing him to 30 days in jail.

“I don’t know that you’re taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this?” McHugh said. “The whole courtroom was laughing. I’m not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn’t a joke.”

Middlebrooks returns

Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks returned from the disabled list last night and assumed his usual starting job at the hot corner.

With Middlebrooks back in the lineup the Sox designated utility infielder Pedro Ciriaco for assignment. The demotion of Ciriaco, who has struggled defensively this season, means that Jose Iglesias will stay on the roster. Iglesias has played well when with the big club this season.
